Tom has worked in financial services since 1986 (with a brief foray into electric bikes in 2020). For 18 years he was head of policy and lead pensions spokesman for the investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown. During this time, he was a frequent contributor to media and policy discussions and analysis of pensions. In 2021 Tom conducted an external review of the Money and Pensions Service on behalf of the DWP. He now works for the Edinburgh based consultancy the lang cat, providing financial services firms with strategic advice on policy issues and PR. In 2022 Tom authored a report on the Equity Release sector, titled House Rules.
